Pakistan Arts Community — The Mountain Residency That Doesn't Exist Yet

The artist residency — a defined period of time in a setting specifically designed to support creative production — is a well-established institution in global arts culture. From the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire to the Cité des Arts in Paris to Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, the residency model has produced a disproportionate share of significant artistic work across visual art, literature, music composition, and performing arts.

Pakistan has minimal formal artist residency infrastructure. The arts funding bodies that exist (PNCA, provincial arts councils) do not consistently operate residency programmes with dedicated accommodation and production time. Individual artists and creative organisations that want the residency experience — protected time, a different environment, creative community — must find it informally.

The informal version: a group of 6-10 Pakistani artists in different disciplines books Himalaya Villas for 5-7 nights. Each person brings a defined creative project — the novel chapter, the series of paintings, the musical composition — and the week is structured around individual production time (mornings, protected) and communal time (evenings at the cedar garden, shared meals, walks in the forest). No facilitator, no curriculum. The residency is the time, the environment, and the community.

The cost, split across 8 people in 2 villas (approximately PKR 115,000-130,000 per night), is PKR 14,000-16,000 per person per night — within the range that a modest arts grant could cover for a week-long residency.

The cedar forest at 6,800 feet is the specific natural environment that has historically served artists — the forest walk at dawn, the evening fire, the visual material of the mountain landscape. It is 45 minutes from Islamabad — accessible without the expedition overhead that the northern areas require. And Himalaya Villas provides the accommodation infrastructure that the residency needs: private individual sleeping space, shared gathering space, in-villa kitchen service, and the private estate model that eliminates the public hotel environment.
